More than 2,000 eye patients are expected to receive free treatment and surgery at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret.
According to MTRH ophthalmologist Dr. James Bett, patients requiring surgery during an ongoing eye camp sponsored by the Lions Club in conjunction with the hospital will be treated free of charge.
More than 800 patients from Uasin Gishu and the North Rift region will benefit from free surgery after being screened, Dr Bett said.
Dr Bett said that during a similar camp last year, 1,000 patients were seen and 280 surgeries were performed.
“As a hospital, we are urging residents with eye problems across the country to come for screening which is sponsored by the Lions Club, those found with eye defects will receive free treatment and surgery if needed. “, he added.
“I call on all patients with an eye defect to come to the hospital so that they can be screened after surgery,” added Dr Bett.
According to Dr. Bett, the main cause of eye problems is diabetes, vitamin A deficiency, cataracts, and sometimes injuries children receive when playing with objects that harm them.
MTRH commended the Lions Club for its exemplary work, especially in providing essential support to reduce blindness in society.
Lions Club international director JB Singh said they will continue to support those less fortunate in society through the provision of health care.
